Four Habits to Change Before the Baby Arrives

#1. Jumping Up

For the next few years, you will be carrying someone or something almost every time you come through the door. Practice having Barney greet you without jumping by teaching him to sit and wait for a release word.

#2. Free Feeding

Put Barney on a regular schedule of meals. There are numerous health benefits to this, but the biggest benefit will be that Brianna will never get to taste kibble or dump the whole bowl of food into Barney’s water dish.

#3. Pawing You for Attention

If you are holding Brianna and Barney plops his paw up onto your lap with a big ker-thunk, you will be really annoyed. If Barney does this, get up and walk away. Be sure to interact with him when he sits beside you without pawing.

#4. Drinking Out of the Toilet Bowl

Open toilets are a safety hazard for toddlers, not to mention unsanitary. Give Barney a water bowl and remind yourself to keep the toilet lid down.

Contact a trainer if you need help changing your dog's behavior. Once your baby arrives, you'll be very busy, so take advantage of the time you have now. Click here for suggestions on how to find a good trainer.
